Sunset Valley Orchids 2016 Cattleya List

Compact Catts

Compact growing Cattleyas have gained considerable interest with hobbyist for some important reasons.

  • Plants will stay under 12” tall and bloom in 4”- 5” pots.
  • They are space savings so with more plants per sq. ft. makes for more flowers per sq. ft.
  • Flowers are appealing, with large size and wide range of colors.
  • New hybrids are bred to carry the flowers well, on strong stems that don’t require staking.
  • They grow well under a wide range of cultural conditions.

The crosses listed represent the most modern breeding available, with many outstanding hybrids having great potential.  I have spent hours describing the potential of the offspring, so read on!

SVO 5191
Pot. NEW HYBRID
(Blc. Izumi Charm 'Zoom Zoom' x Pot. Golden Circle 'OPRL')

Izumi Charm (Lc. Melody Fair x Blc. Love Sound) produces 4-6 large light yellow flowers with beautiful crimsons lips on a strong stem.  Golden Circle (Slc. Circle of Life x Blc. Goldenzelle) has Orange Petals and a Red Lip, thus the cultivar name ‘OPRL’.  It blooms 3 times a year, and its flowers have amazing shape.  The expectation is for these to flower in a range of colors from orange to yellow, all with excellent dark red lips.  Limited supply.

SVO 5474 NEW
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Angel's Dream 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS)

Angel's Dream (Slc. Bright Angel x Lc. Mari's Song) is a nice compact grower that flowers twice a year.  Flowers are red with bright yellow flares, which makes for a very attractive and eye-catching color combination!  Love Sound has long ago proven itself as an excellent breeder.  It imparts several important qualities, including full, rounded flowers, bright yellow color, a good stem carrying 4-6 blooms, and an attractive compact growth habit.  This cross will deliver colorful blooms, many flared, on compact plants.

SVO 5529 NEW
Slc. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Spirit of Seventy-Six 'Cherry Wine' HCC/AOS x Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #3' )

The expectation here is for starry, dark red flowers held above the foliage, and a compact plant habit.  Spirit of Seventy-Six (L. milleri x Brandywine) is a smaller plant with intense fiery-red flowers, and Spring Fires (Fires of Spring x Fire Island) has deep red flowers on strong stems.  Dark red stars...

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Fordyce Prelude 'Pinnacle' AM/AOS x Lc. Tokyo Magic '6-1' AM/AOS)

The breeding behind Fordyce Prelude (Slc. California Apricot x Blc. Horizon Flight) is amazing: both parents founded significant breeding lines, with many exceptional crosses to their credit.  The cultivar ‘Pinnacle’ has wide petals, giving the flowers a very full shape, and the color is yellow with dark red flares and a dark red lip.  Truly a beautiful flower!  Tokyo Magic is a proven breeder with many exceptional hybrids to its credit.  This grex imparts good flower shape, red lip color, good stems and a compact upright plant habit.  I'm looking forward to seeing the full-shaped, bright yellow flowers with dark red lips that this cross will produce.  As a bonus, many should have deep red flares.

SVO 5702
Blc. NEW HYBRID
(Lc. Dennis Olivas 'Best' x Blc. Fordyce Fantasy 'SVO Best')

Dennis Olivas (Trick or Treat x C. Penny Kuroda) has great flowers that are golden yellow with dark red flares, produced in big heads of 15 or more blooms.  Really showy!  Fordyce Fantasy (Horizon Flight x C. aurantiaca) carries 10-13 beautiful flowers with excellent shape.  The blooms are bright yellow with dark red flares and a red picotee on the petal margin - a very eye-catching!  This grex is all about big heads of flowers in yellow to gold with excellent red flaring.  These will flower in February and March, in time for the Spring show season.  I really like this type of breeding, and these plants should be really terrific!

SVO 5705
Dialc. NEW HYBRID [(Lc. Ann Akagi x Silver Toy) 'SVO' 3002 x Lc. Tiny Treasure 'Norito']

I really like pink flowers with yellow lips.  This color form is a challenge to breed, and I've been working to improve these types of hybrids for some time now.  Dialc. (Lc. Ann Akagi x Silver Toy) has amazingly well-formed flowers in a nice soft pink - check out the photo!  As an extra bonus, the strong stems hold 5-7 flowers above the foliage.  Tiny Treasure has the rupicolous Laelia lucasiana in its breeding, which significantly reduces plant size and allows for dark pink flowers with yellow lips to be produced.  Sorry - no picture, but if it is any consolation, noted Paphiopedilum expert Norito Hasegawa selected this one from a large group of first bloom seedlings at Stewart Orchids many years ago.  This cross is high on my “really want to see them bloom” list!  I believe we will see excellent form, dark pink tepals with yellow lips, and strong stems holding the flowers above the foliage.  As an extra benefit, the rupicolous Laelia should help to keep plant size down.  Overall, this should be a great hybrid.

SVO 5709
Pot. NEW HYBRID [Bc. Little Mermaid 'Janet' AM/AOS x (Lc. Angel Heart x Slc. Fire Fantasy) 'SVO']

Little Mermaid is C. walkeriana x Bc. Maikai, and Bc. Maikai is (B. nodosa x C. bowringiana), so just three species are represented in Little Mermaid.  The flowers are lavender-pink with a broad spotted lip and the charm of the B. nodosa grandparent. Slc. (Lc. Angel Heart x Fire Fantasy) is a very nice pink flower displaying darker pink-lavender flares, with excellent shape and stem.  This is a bit of “novelty” breeding, and we're looking for pink splashing on the petals and large, broad lips.  Plants will be compact growers, and I expect them to bloom twice a year.

SVO 5666
L. NEW HYBRID (L. anceps 'Gypsy Sky' x L. Finckeniana ‘Kennedys' AM/AOS 4N)

These will be really nice and especially desirable, if you like L. anceps hybrids.  These will flower on long arching stems, with 7-8 lavender-pink flowers looking a lot like an improved L. anceps.  Plants will be hardy and tolerate the cold of winter and heat of summer.  Limited Supply.

SVO 5755
Pot. Orange Neon (Pot. Gold Medallions 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Pot. Love Passion 'Dogashima')

Gold Medallions (Slc. Wasp Nest x Blc. Love Sound) has flowers that look like gold medallions, with very round blooms in gold colors.  I've been using Love Passion (William Farrell x Lc. Trick or Treat) in place of Trick or Treat in some hybrids lately, as Love Passion is a lot like a “super” Trick or Treat, with 15+ larger, fuller orange flowers, carried well above the foliage. These are producing colorful, bright, golden-orange-yellow flowers, thus the name of the grex.

SVO 5756
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Rubescent Fire 'SVO Red Blast' x Pot. Lovely Elaine 'SVO')

Rubescent Fire (Lc. Spring Fires x Rubescence) has a dark red flower with an even darker red lip.  The colors are just fantastic, and the full-shaped flowers are well presented on a good stem.  Lovely Elaine (Elaine Taylor x Blc. Love Sound) has great color and form, and is held on a good stem too.  Breeding for compact growing dark red flowers has come a long way, but stem strength and flower carriage are still improving.  This grex is designed to incorporate the stem qualities of Lc. Spring Fires and Blc. Love Sound, while maintaining the superior color and form of Pot. Rubescence and Pot. Elaine Taylor.  A very promising hybrid!

SVO 5758
Pot. Lebenkreis (Pot. Rubescence 'SVO' AM/AOS x Slc. Circle of Life 'Fordyce Herald Angel' AM/AOS)
Both parents are good breeders, and earlier results of this style of breeding have validated this reputation.  The flowers are a deep red with excellent form and size; some flowers will measure more than 5” across.  Plants stay under 10” tall and flower twice a year.  This as a high quality cross - take a look at these pictures of the first blooming plants Pic 1,  Pic 2   What more can you ask for in a red Cattleya hybrid?

SVO 5762 NEW
Lc. Michelle Obama (Lc. Mini Purple 'Dark Purple' F2 x C. trianae 'Cashens' FCC/AOS

This strain of Mini Purple is in its 2nd generation.  It has taken 17 years of development to come this far; take a look at the picture.  Its superior color and form are unequaled. C. trianae 'Cashens' is the best of its type, with surprisingly wide petals, large flat flowers, and a beautifully formed and colored lip.  These are going to be compact growing plants that will flower in 3-4” pots.  The flowers will be dark purple, have excellent form, and bloom at Christmas.  These plants and flowers will look like a scaled-down standard Cattleya.

SVO 5765
Pot. Louise Clarke (Pot.Golden Circle 'OPRL' x Pot. Rubescence 'SVO' AM/AOS)

This grex is named for my mother.  Yes, it's that good!  Golden Circle (Blc. Goldenzelle x Slc. Circle of Life) has Orange Petals and a Red Lip, thus the cultivar name ‘OPRL’.  It has amazing shape and color, plus it blooms 3 times a year.  Rubescence (Blc. Oconee x Slc. Seagulls Apricot) has proven itself as an outstanding breeder of fine reds.  This is a high quality cross!  Take a look at these pictures of the first blooming plants. Pic 1,    Pic 2 , Pic 3

SVO 5768
Pot. Jersey Fire (Pot. Mem. Jim Nickou 'James' HCC/AOS x Slc. Circle of Life 'Mesmerize' AM/AOS)

The parents of Mem. Jim Nickou (Blc. Xanthette x Sc. Beaufort) both are famous breeders, with many successful hybrids to their credit.  The cultivar ‘James’ has well formed, flat solid yellow flowers, with just a hint of red on the lip, and the plant flowers two to three times a year.  The late Cattleya hybridizer Frank Fordyce developed Circle of life (Lc. Culminant x Soph. coccinea), which may be his crowning achievement.  The flowers have exceptional size, color and form.  Hybrids made with Circle of Life exhibit consistently high quality, and Jersey Fire will follow this pattern.  These plants will begin to flower in 3” pots and mature in 4” pots.  Flower quality will be high, with blooms measuring 4” or more, in a range of colors from red to coral-red.

SVO 5774     NEW
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Kagaribi Dawn 'Red Star'x Pot. Star Fire 'Rockin' Red')

Kagaribi Dawn has star-shaped blooms in an intense red color that is quite an attention getter.  The flowers of Star Fire (Lc. Trick or Treat x Rubescence) are produced on a strong stem holding 5-7 deep red blooms.  This grex was made to further develop intensely-colored, deep red flowers of starry shape, held high on long inflorescences.  These will flower in mid February.  Limited Supply.

SVO 5781 NEW
Lctna. NEW HYBRID (Lctna. Blood Moon 'SVO' x Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #2')

Okay, here is an advanced direction in Broughtonia breeding.  Blood Moon (Lc. Rojo x Ctna. Why Not) has dark red flowers held above the foliage, in clusters of 13-15 on branched stems, all on a compact growing plant.  Spring Fires (Fires of Spring x Fire Island) flowers with 5-9 deep red flower held on strong stems.  I believe the Broughtonia will influence flower form, and the inflorescences will carry the dark red blooms well above the foliage.  Something new in Broughtonia-based breeding.  Limited Supply.

SVO 5783
Blc. NEW HYBRID
(Lc. Fame 'N Glory 'Arch-Type' HCC/AOS x Blc. Laughing Boy 'SVO Flare' AM/AOS)

This cross is all about large clusters of orange-yellow flowers with bright red flares on strong stems.  Fame 'N Glory (Gila Wilderness x Trick or Treat) has orange flowers with a large red splash on the petals.  Laughing Boy (Lc. Dennis Olivas x Love Sound) produces a beautiful cluster of 12-14 flowers that are bright yellow with red flares on the petals and lateral sepals.  These will make for exceptional show plants with eye catching color.  Limited Supply.

SVO 5784
Blc. Love and Fame (Lc. Flame 'N Glory 'Arch-Type' HCC/AOS x Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS)

Fame 'N Glory (Gila Wilderness x Trick or Treat) has orange flowers with a large red splash on each petal.  Love Sound has proven itself as an excellent breeder, imparting several important qualities: like full, rounded flowers, bright yellow color, a good stem carrying 4-6 blooms, and an attractive compact plant habit.  This cross will produce 3-5 yellow flowers with magenta flares and lips on sturdy upright inflorescences.

SVO 5786 NEW
Blc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Straight Answer 'No Question' AM/AOS x Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS)

Straight Answer (Milton Warne x Trick or Treat) is a Stewart Orchids hybrid popularized by the clone ‘No Question,’ which earned accolades for its big heads of yellow flowers flared with red.  The proven breeding qualities of Love Sound - full, rounded flowers, bright yellow color, a sturdy stem carrying 4-6 blooms, and an attractive compact plant habit - make this cross a well-thought-out pairing.  Strong sturdy stems will hold 5-9 bright yellow flowers well above the foliage, and the many blooms will be flared in red, most with red lips.

SVO 5793
Pot. Mark's Valentine (Pot. Little Toshie 'Gold Country' AM/AOS x Slc. Circle of Life 'Red Halo' HCC/AOS)

This is a good, reliable hybrid.  It blooms well and has attractive red flowers with darker red lips and contrasting yellow eyes.  I believe that Little Toshie ‘Gold Country’ (Sc. Beaufort x Blc. Toshie Aoki) is the best cultivar of this delightful grex.  It flowers 2-3 times a year with superb, flat, bright yellow flowers and dark red lips.  Circle of Life (Lc. Culminant x Soph. coccinea) needs little introduction, and hybrids made with this excellent parent produce offspring with a high average quality.  These are really nice!

SVO 5794
Pot. Martha Clarke (Slc. Circle of Life 'Fordyce Herald Angel' AM/AOS x Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS)

Not much needs to be said about this one, except that this grex is named for my wife.  It has to be good!  The combination of Circle of Life and Love Sound, both deservedly famous breeders, will make for award quality flowers and add to the 8 AOS awards already given to this grex.  This is a good addition for the discriminating collector.

SVO 5796
Slc. NEW HYBRID (Kagaribi Dawn 'Red Star’ BM/JOGA x L. Gold Star 'Dean's Gold')

Kagaribi Dawn flowers with starry shaped blooms in an intense red color that is quite an attention getter.  Gold Star (flava x harpophylla) has an intense orange-yellow color with 15 plus flowers per inflorescence.  Both have a starry open shape and both have intense color.  I expect flowers in sunset colors from this is novelty hybrid.  Limited Supply.

SVO 5798 NEW
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Picotee Flight 'SVO' x Slc. Mari’s Vision 'SVO')

Good quality flowers with a nice picotee are pretty hard to come by in the Cattleya alliance.  But a good hybridizer will rise to the occasion!  The flowers of Picotee Flight (Horizon Flight x Love Sound) have a pretty nice color combination: the yellow flowers have a beautiful red picotee around the petal margins.  The plants also have sturdy stems holding 5-7 flowers above the foliage.  Mari’s Vision (Lc. Mari’s Song x Slc. Fire Fantasy) really has an exceptional picotee - just take a look at the picture!  Its drawback, however, is that only 2 flowers are produced.  With this cross, we are looking to produce flowers with a well-defined picotee, improved flower count on sturdy stems, and, of course, well-formed flowers.  Does it sound like I’m asking for too much?  If I were a betting man, this is one I would consider!

SVO 5799
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Burana Angel 'SVO' HCC/AOS  x Pot. Martha Clarke 'Hawaii Trip' 3)

Burana Angel (Burana Beauty x Slc. Bright Angel) is a red flower with superimposed heavy red flares, and two small yellow spots at the base of the petals:a very interesting color combination.  Martha Clarke (Slc. Circle of Life x Blc. Love Sound) is very beautiful and has wide orange petals, with a touch of red flaring at the tips, and excellent form.  Here we are looking for blooms with a variety of exotic flaring and patterns.  I expect many will sport deep red flares with a range of lighter sunset colors.  The 5-7 flowers will be well supported, as both parents have good stem strength.  Limited Supply.

SVO 5804
Epc. Kyoguchi ('M. Sauno' mutation x 'Peter's Pick' )

Kyoguchi is C. aurantiaca x E. incumbens (syn. aromatica).  I really like this hybrid!  It is such a novelty, blooming with 25-30 highly perfumed yellow flowers on branched inflorescences.  This sibling cross is between two tetraploid cultivars with outstanding flower quality for the grex.  These are really nice and quite adaptable to a variety of growing conditions.

SVO 5805
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Peter Lin 'SVO' x Pot. Rubescent Fire 'SVO Red Blast')

Pot. Peter Lin (Blc. Mem. Ralph Smith x Slc. Circle of Life) really has a long list of famous ancestors: Blc. Oconee, Blc. Waikiki Sunset, Pot. Sally Taylor, Lc. Culminant, C. Chocolate Drop and Soph. coccinea,  Very impressive!  The flowers are a bright, vibrant, true red, with full form and 3-5 blooms per inflorescence.  Rubescent Fire (Lc. Spring Fires x Pot. Rubescence) has a dark red flower with an even darker red lip.  The color is just fantastic, and the full-shaped flowers are presented well on a good stem.  Here we are continuing the breeding for improved inflorescence strength and expecting well-supported, flat, deep red flowers, with very full shape.

SVO 5808
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #3' x Pot. Star Fire 'Rockin' Red')

This year, as you can see, I have stepped up the use of Spring Fires (Fires of Spring x Fire Island).  I really like the strong stems holding up 7-9 red flowers with darker red lips.  The flowers of Star Fire (Lc. Trick or Treat x Pot. Rubescence) are also produced on a strong stem, with 5-7 deep vibrant red blooms.  This grex was made as a continuation to further improve the fullness of the flower form, raise flower count to 5-7 on sturdy stems above the foliage, and intensify the deep red color.  This is a very promising hybrid.

SVO 5811
Slc. Dal's Buddy (Lc. Aussie Sunset 'Cosmic Fire' x Sc. Beaufort 'Luna Rousse')

I have seen pictures of Slc. Dal's Buddy in the Australian orchid magazines and on the Rosella Orchids web site, but have never seen plants offered here in the USA.  The grex was originally made by the late David Littman, a well respected Australian Cattleya hybridizer, with several plants cloned and sold all over Australia.  I have always wanted some of these, and importing plants from Australia isn't always easy, so I decided to make the cross myself.  Plants mature at 6” tall, with many flowers flared, influenced by Aussie Sunset, and with excellent shape imparted by Beaufort.

SVO 5812
Pot. NEW HYBRID
(Blc. Picotee Flight 'SVO' x Slc. Angel Eyes 'SVO II' AM/AOS)

The flowers of Picotee Flight (Horizon Flight x Love Sound) have a nice color combination.  The yellow flowers have a red picotee around the petal margin, and the plants have sturdy stems holding 5-7 flowers above the foliage.  Angel Eyes (Bright Angel x Lc. Little Dipper) has a full-shaped rounded flower with lots of color: yellow, orange, and a deep red splash on the petals and lip.  Great flares are assured with variable patterning of flower color; all will be in shades of yellow, orange and red.

SVO 5813
Pot. NEW HYBRID
(Pot. Burana Angel 'SVO II’ HCC/AOS x Pot. Martha Clarke 'Orange Tart')

This cross and SVO 5799 are similar, using the same Burana Angel (Burana Beauty x Slc. Bright Angel) but a different Martha Clarke (Slc. Circle of Life x Blc. Love Sound). ‘Orange Tart’ has superior shape, and I consider it the best formed flower of this grex. The orange petals have a red blush and bold red flare - an outstanding color combination! These will flower with a variety of petal flaring and patterns.  I expect that many will produce golden-orange flowers with deep red flares.  The plants will also carry 5-7 flowers that are well supported, as both parents have good stem strength.

SVO 5816
Pot. NEW HYBRID
(Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #2' x Pot. Martha Clarke 'Orange Tart')

This year I decided to ramp up the use of Spring Fires (Fires of Spring x Fire Island).  I really like the strong stems with 7-9 red flowers and darker red lips.  The Martha Clarke (Slc. Circle of Life x Blc. Love Sound) has superior shape, and I consider it the cultivar with the best formed flower in this grex.  The orange petals have a red blush and bold red flares, and the flowers are produced 4-6 per stem.  This breeding is designed to fill out the flower shape, produce 5-7 bright red to orange flowers on each strong upright inflorescence, and keep plant size under 12” tall.

SVO 5818
Pot. NEW HYBRID
(Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #3' x Pot. Al Thanhauser 'My Beauty')

Spring Fires (Lc. Fires of Spring x Lc. Fire Island) has strong stems with 7-9 red flowers and darker red lips held high above the foliage. Al Thanhauser (C. Orchidglade x Pot. Rubescence) has fantastic sparkling red flowers with dark burgundy lips, produced 4 to 5 on strong stems.  This grex is working toward further intensification of deep red flower color, fullness of the segments and form, and flower count of 5-7 on sturdy stems.  This is a very promising hybrid!

SVO 5820 NEW
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Slc. Sierra Gem 'SVO’ HCC/AOS x Pot. Firehouse 'SVO')

Sierra Gem (Slc. Hazel Boyd x Sl. Pole Star) was an insightful hybrid made by Alan Koch of Gold Country Orchids.  The plants are small growing and consistently high quality - almost every one is good.  The well-shaped blooms range in color from solid red to sunset shades, with a few pure yellow.  Firehouse (Blc. Love Sound x Pot. Rubescence) has 3-4 rounded red-purple flowers held well on sturdy stems.  These will be compact-growing plants with a clean upright growth habit.  The well-rounded flowers will be mostly in red colors and supported nicely above the foliage.  These should start to flower in 3” pots.

SVO 5823
Pot. NEW HYBRID
(Pot. Mem. Jim Nickou 'James' HCC/AOS x Blc. Kaboom 'SVO')

The parents of Mem. Jim Nickou (Blc. Xanthette x Sc. Beaufort) are well known and have many successful hybrids to their credit.  The cultivar ‘James’ has well-formed, flat, solid yellow flowers with just a hint of red on the lip, and the plant blooms 2 to 3 times a year.  The newly registered Kaboom (Guess What x Schroder's Love) has 5-7 sparkling bright yellow flowers with an orange throat on great stems; the great color and presentation inspired the name "Kaboom!"  This cross promises to deliver 5-7 bright yellow flowers with golden orange throats of excellent form on good stems.  This cross is not to be missed!

SVO 5827
Pot. Dean's Gold (Pot. Mem. Jim Nickou 'James' HCC/AOS x Pot. Little Toshie 'Gold Country' AM/AOS )

Dean’s Gold is a compact plant that will flower 2x a year, in the early winter and again in late spring.  The vivid yellow flowers have excellent full shape with contrasting bright red lips.  Both parents have proven breeding potential.  Mem. Jim Nickou (Blc. Xanthette x Sc. Beaufort) has well formed, flat, solid yellow flowers with just a hint of red on the lip and flowers 2 to 3 times a year.  Little Toshie ‘Gold Country’ (Sc. Beaufort x Blc. Toshie Aoki) is the best cultivar from this grex, also flowering 2 to 3 times a year, with superb flat, bright yellow flowers and dark red lips.

SVO 5828
Slc. Life's Melody (Lc. Magic Melody 'SVO' AM/AOS x Slc. Circle of Life Trailblazer' AM/AOS)

I can’t begin to say enough about Life’s Melody!  For starters, I'm very impressed by the color and size of the flowers.  Take a look at these first to bloom Pic 1, Pic 2 . The capsule parent, Magic Melody (Tokyo Magic x Melody Fair), is truly exceptional.  Here's the award description: “Six flowers evenly spaced on one erect inflorescence; sepals and petals white, lateral sepals striped yellow centrally; lip deep purple, throat yellow; substance firm; texture matte.”  The flowers measured a whopping 5” across, and the petals were 2 ½”  wide - Wow!  Circle of life (Lc. Culminant x Soph. coccinea) has flowers of tremendous size, color and exceptional form.  It has been used extensively as a parent and has many successful hybrids to its credit.  The pictures of first bloom seedlings pretty much say it all.  I often talk about crosses with a ‘high average of flower quality,’ and this grex has it!  A great addition for the discriminating collector.

SVO 5829
Pot. NEW HYBRID
(Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #3' x Pot. Firehouse 'SVO')

Spring Fires (Lc. Fires of Spring x Lc. Fire Island) has strong stems holding 7-9 red flowers with darker red lips.  Firehouse (Blc. Love Sound x Rubescence) has 3-4 rounded flowers in a red-purple color held well on sturdy stems.  These will be compact growing plants with an upright growth habit.  The flowers will be red and supported nicely above the foliage.  Springtime red flowers are a favorite, and this cross should provide those very well.

SVO 5835 NEW
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Picotee Flight 'SVO Picotee' x Slc. Angel's Fantasy 'Solar Flare' FCC/AOS)

The flowers of Picotee Flight (Horizon Flight x Love Sound) have a lovely color combination - the yellow flowers have a red picotee around the petal margin - and the plants have sturdy stems holding 5-7 flowers above the foliage.  The FCC/AOS for Angel's Fantasy 'Solar Flare' (Fire Fantasy x Bright Angel) says it all - it’s the top of its class!  Just take a look at the picture.   These should be particularly showy, with brilliant yellow flowers and bright red flares.  As a bonus, they should flower twice a year!

SVO 5836
Blc. Kaboom (Blc. Schroder's Love 'SVO' AM/AOS x Blc. Guess What 'SVO'AM/AOS)

Schroder’s Love (C. schroderae x Love Sound) lends its great flower form, size and strong stem to this grex.  Guess What (Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) adds its high flower count of 9-1l bright orange blooms on a strong stem.  The great color and presentation of the flowers inspired the name "Kaboom!"  These are really nice and not to be overlooked!  The reciprocal cross is also available. SVO 5863

SVO 5837
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Hawaiian Prominence 'America' AM/AOS x Sl. Orpetii 'Kathleen' AM/AOS)

The intense purple-red color and bright yellow throat of Hawaiian Prominence (Hisako Akatsuka x Slc. Wendy's Redstone) command the attention of all who see them.  Orpetii is a primary hybrid (L. pumila x Soph. coccinea), and the cultivar ‘Kathleen’ is particularly nice, with its dark purple-red color, wide segments and flat presentation.  Orpetii has a prestigious heritage as a breeder, with its progeny having won more than 100 AOS awards!  Based on these excellent parental genetics, I predict this cross will produce a number of award quality plants.  Flowers will be an intense purple-red, with wide petals and flat petal stance.  Plants will mature at 6-8” tall and have a nice compact growth habit.  Very limited supply.

SVO 5838
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot Orange Neon 'SVO' x Lc. Love Passion 'Dogashima')

Orange Neon (Gold Medallions x Love Passion) produces colorful, bright golden-orange-yellow flowers, and Love Passion (William Farrell x Lc. Trick or Treat) produces 15 or more orange flowers carried nicely above the foliage.  The expectation is for brilliantly colored orange-gold flowers, with plants blooming in February and March.

SVO 5840
Roth. NEW HYBRID (Epc. Kyoguchi 'M. Sauno' mutation x Pot. Gold Medallions 'SVO' HCC/AOS)

Kyoguchi [C. aurantiaca x Encyl. incumbens (syn. aromatica)] is a great novelty that blooms with 25-30 highly fragrant yellow flowers on branched inflorescences.  Gold Medallions (Slc. Wasp Nest x Blc. Love Sound) blooms with 7-9 very round golden flowers that look like medallions.  The combination of this round flower shape and golden color with the highly floriferous and fragrant Kyoguchi is expected to create a wonderful, fragrant hybrid that produces consistently high quality offspring.  This novelty hybrid is showing excellent plant vigor.  A fun new style of breeding.

SVO 5846
Blc. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS x Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS)

Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) has a high flower count and bright orange flowers on strong stems.  Love Sound is an excellent breeder, imparting important qualities like full rounded flowers, bright yellow color, a good stem carrying 4-6 blooms, and an attractive compact growth plant habit.  This grex will produce flowers with great golden-yellow color, held above the foliage.  The plants are growing quite well and sizing up nicely.

SVO 5847
Eplc. Magic Wand  (Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Beauty' HCC/AOS x Epc. Kyoguchi 'M. Sauno' mutation)

What a great novelty hybrid this is!  Magic Wand produces fragrant flowers in a range of colors, including orange, red and yellow, on branched stems, with sometimes as many as 4 branches per stem!  Plants are super easy to grow and bloom.  The individual flowers are about 1 ½” across, and a mature specimen with a nicely branched spike puts on its own flower show!  This is a fun cross that everyone should have in their collection.

SVO 5848
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS x Pot. Cosmo-Zelle 'Feuerbach' AM/AOS)

Love Sound is an excellent breeder, imparting important qualities like full rounded flowers, bright yellow color, a good stem carrying 4-6 blooms, and an attractive compact growth plant habit.  Cosmo-Zelle (Sc. Beaufort x Blc. Goldenzelle) has beautifully rounded, bright yellow flowers with full shaped lips.  Plants are only 6” tall with flowers measuring 3 ½” across.  The plants are growing very quickly and sizing up nicely, with some showing sheaths already.  This looks to be a great cross!

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Winners' Circle 'Champion' x Pot. Dream Circle 'SVO' AM/AOS)

The late Frank Fordyce developed Circle of life (Lc. Culminant x Soph. coccinea), which has flowers of exceptional size, color and form.  Hybrids made with Circle of Life exhibit consistently high quality.  Both Winners' Circle (Sally Taylor x Slc. Circle of Life) and Dream Circle (Slc. Circle of Life x Hisako Akatsuka) are successful hybrids, producing flowers of outstanding quality.  Here we are doubling up on the influence of Circle of Life, adding the great stem strength of Sally Taylor and superior form of Hisako Akatsuka.  These are going to have large 4 ½” flowers of outrageously full shape in colors of intense magenta-purple.  This is a good one for the discerning collector.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Jerry Rehfield 'Paradise Fuchsia' x Pot. Lebenkreis 'Diamond Orchids')

Jerry Rehfield (Hisako Akatsuka x Hawaiian Prominence) has brilliant magenta-red flower color, blooms with good shape, and plants that mature at 8” tall.  Lebenkreis (Rubescence x Slc. Circle of Life) is a deep vibrant red with excellent form and size.  Flowers measure up to 5” across, and plants stay under 10” tall.  These will be compact growing plants that mature at around 10” tall, with intensely-colored deep red flowers that will have great form.  This breeding is designed to produce compact plants with flowers that look like scaled-down standard/large-sized Cattleya blooms.

SVO 5852
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Mem. Irene Feil 'Ruby Red' x Pot. Lebenkreis 'Diamond Orchids')

The flowers of Mem. Irene Feil (Slc. Pink Doll x Odom's Sweetheart) are ruby red and well supported on strong stems.  Lebenkreis (Rubescence x Slc. Circle of Life) has deep red flowers of excellent form and size, with some flowers measuring up to 5” across!  Both parents stay under 10” tall and flower twice a year.  This is a very promising hybrid for true red flowers with super shape.  This breeding is designed to produce compact plants and flowers that look like scaled-down standard/large-sized Cattleya blooms.

SVO 5854
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Hawaiian Prominence 'America' AM/AOS x Pot. Lebenkreis 'Diamond Orchids')

The intense purple-red color and bright yellow throat of Hawaiian Prominence (Hisako Akatsuka x Slc. Wendy's Redstone) command attention!  Flowers are nicely shaped and displayed well on good stems.  Lebenkreis (Rubescence x Slc. Circle of Life) has deep red flowers with excellent form and size, some measuring up to 5” across!  Great flower colors in magenta-red are expected, and the blooms should have good shape and measure 4” across on compact plants standing about 10” tall.

SVO 5857
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Mem. Jim Nickou 'James' HCC/AOS x Blc. Love Sound 'Dogashima' AM/AOS)
This will be an excellent hybrid for pure yellow flowers and strong stems holding 5-7 blooms well above the foliage.  Mem. Jim Nickou (Blc. Xanthette x Sc. Beaufort) has well formed, flat, solid yellow flowers with just a hint of red on the lip.  Love Sound has been proven as an excellent breeder, imparting important qualities like full rounded flowers, bright yellow color, a good stem carrying 4-6 blooms, and an attractive compact plant habit.  These will begin to flower at a young age and mature in 4” pots.

SVO 5863
Blc. Kaboom (Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS x Blc. Schroder's Love 'SVO' AM/AOS)

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Mem. Jim Nickou 'James' HCC/AOS x Slc. California Apricot 'Orange Circle' HCC/AOS)

The parents of Mem. Jim Nickou (Blc. Xanthette x Sc. Beaufort) both are famous breeders, with many successful hybrids to their credit.  The cultivar ‘James’ has well formed, flat, solid yellow flowers with just a hint of red on the lip, and the plant flowers two to three times a year.  California Apricot is also a famous breeding plant and has produced many highly successful hybrids.  Its bright orange flowers are produced twice a year and really light up the growing area.  Some fantastic genes are coming together here, and the results should be excellent.  Flat flowers, rounded petals, great color, compact plants flowering twice a year.  You've gotta love it!

SVO 5866
Blc. NEW HYBRID (Lc. Tropical Sunset 'Cheer Girl' HCC/AOS x Blc. Laughing Boy 'SVO Flame' AM/AOS)

The capsule parent, Tropical Sunset (C. Horace x Tropic Glow), has 5-7 large orange flowers with full dark red lips that are well presented on a strong inflorescence; it is an excellent hybrid!  The pollen parent, Laughing Boy (Lc. Dennis Olivas x Love Sound), has beautiful clusters of 12-14 blooms that are bright yellow with red flares on the petals and lateral sepals - a real attention getter!  The expectation is for most to have orange flowers with red flares and dark red lips.  Some will be solid orange with red lips, and all will have great flower count and presentation.

SVO 5867
Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Paradise Rose 'SVO' x Pot. Lebenkreis 'Diamond Orchids')

If you want the darkest, most vibrant crimson-red flowers imaginable, this grex will do it!  Paradise Rose (Slc. Pink Doll x Blc. Toshie Aoki) has great color and shows an interesting phenomenon of color dominance.  The flowers of Pink Doll are dark purple, and Blc. Toshie Aoki, dominated by the influence of C. dowiana, has flowers that are bright yellow with a dark red lip.  C. dowiana hybrids are recessive for color but are known to intensify purple, and Pink Doll has dark purple flowers.  So...Paradise Rose combines these traits and produces intense crimson-red-purple flowers.  Lebenkreis (Slc. Circle of Life x Rubescence) has dark red flowers of excellent shape.  These really are going to be nice, with excellent form and amazing color, all on compact plants less than 8” tall that flower twice a year!  This breeding is designed to produce compact plants with flowers that look like scaled-down standard/large-sized Cattleya blooms.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Hawaiian Prominence 'America' AM/AOS x Lc. Tropical Rainbow 'Montclair' )

The intense purple-red color and bright yellow throat of Hawaiian Prominence (Hisako Akatsuka x Slc. Wendy's Redstone) commands attention, and its well-shaped flowers are also displayed nicely on good stems.  Tropical Rainbow (Commander x Tropic Glow) produces a very nice head of red-purple flowers with a contrasting yellow throat.  Expect 5-7 dark purple-red flowers with darker lips and a bright contrasting yellow throat, all held on sturdy stems.  This will be a real attention getter!

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Hot Topic’SVO' x Pot. Gene Crocker 'SVO')

I have been working to improve flower presentation in red Cattleya hybrids.  This grex incorporates the excellent stem, presentation and shape of Hot Topic (Ryo Iwata x Rubescence) with the super color and form of Gene Crocker (Newberry Delight x Slc. Newberry Promise).  This is the first cross using Gene Crocker as a parent, and it appear to have potential.  This breeding is designed to produce compact plants with flowers that look like scaled-down standard/large-sized Cattleya blooms.

Pot. NEW HYBRID (Pot. Lee's Ruby 'SVO' x Slc. Anduril 'Krull's Scarlet'AM/AOS)

On of my favorite things to see is heads of bright red flowers in February.  This grex of Lee’s Ruby (C. Chocolate Drop x Martha Clarke) and Anduril (Jewel Box x Lc. Trick or Treat) will deliver just that.  Both parents are vigorous growers and flower beautifully, and the offspring should do the same.

Pot. Granata Sunrise
(Lc. Tokyo Magic '6-1' AM/AOS x Slc. Wasp Nest 'Red Red' HCC/AOS)

I remake a cross from time to time, and this one is back by popular demand.  The plants have a great habit, with compact growth and upright leaves, and they flower well in 4” pots, producing sturdy stems carrying 5-7 blooms every March.  The flower color is really appealing, with golden yellow petals, deeply suffused with magenta and increasingly dark near the tips, and a rich magenta lip and golden yellow throat.  Very nice and definitely worth an encore! Lc. NEW HYBRID
(L. anceps 'White Magic' x Lc. Florence Lin 'Diamond Orchids' AM/AOS)

Here is one of those ‘just for fun’ crosses.  L. anceps ‘White Magic’ is a dawsonii type, with white flowers and a white lip with purple veins.  Florence Lin (C. tigrina x L. milleri) has dark red flowers and a crimson-red lip.  When it was awarded an AM/AOS, it had 19 flowers on a single stem!   These will look like high-flowered anceps with long stems carrying 5-9 red to coral-red flowers.  Very nice!

Bl. Yellow Bird
(Bl. Richard Muller x B. nodosa)

The flowers open reddish and become bright yellow with time, and the lip is covered with red spots.  This cross is well known for its vigor, with six cultural awards to date.  One awarded plant was displayed with more than 700 flowers!  Some of these already are blooming in 3” pots.

22693
Bl. NEW HYBRID (Bl. Sunny Delight x Bl. Richard Muller)

I've been getting interested in B. nodosa hybrids.  They are easy to grow, flower with novel bloom shape and have great color.  This cross will have starry yellow flowers with some red spotting on the lips; some have already flowered in 3” pots.  I expect these to have a few more flowers per stem due to the influence of Sunny Delight.  These should be very rewarding and can grow into amazing specimens. Spotted

Spotted flowers have been a favorite of mine for years. Seeing those wonderful spots in the heat of summer is a spectacular sight. Today the development of spotted breeding includes flowers that bloom in a wide range of color choices.  SVO is renowned for its breeding of yellow flowers with red spots and the new line of spotted coerulea flower crosses are not to be missed.

C. Leoloddiglossa f. coerulea (C. Loddiglossa f. coerulea 'Blue Sky' x C. leopoldii f. coerulea 'Kathleen' JC/AOS)

Blue spotted flowers - how cool is that?  This is an outstanding cross with impressive heads of flowers.  The first time I offered this cross, the plants sold very quickly, and six of our customers ended up with AOS awards.  Don’t miss these!  They're really special.  Check out these pictures of the first to bloom.   Pic 1, Pic 2 , Pic 3

C. NEW HYBRID (C. Leoloddiglossa f. coerulea 'SVO'  x C. bicolor f. coerulea 'SVO Blue')

How do you make Leoloddiglossa (Loddiglossa x  leopoldii) better?  Add bicolor!  The broad bicolor lip will improve the lip width of the progeny.  I expect the flowers to be similar in color, shape and flower count to Leoloddiglossa, but much wider lips will give a fullness not previously seen.  This is very nice, unique hybrid, and a first in spotted Cattleya breeding.  Not to be missed!

SVO 5792
Pot. Stippled Sunset (Blc. SunCoast Sunspots 'SVO II' AM/AOS x Slc. Katherine Clarkson 'SVO' HCC/AOS)

Yellow flowers with red spots - what a great combination!  This is one of the best crosses to produce plants that will mature at a modest height of 10” tall and carry 4-6 full shaped 3.5” flowers in bright yellow with red spots and dark red lips.  I can’t imagine better breeding of this type.  This is also available as a reciprocal cross, SVO 5017.  First to flower Pic 1, Pic 2

Pot. NEW HYBRID
(Slc. Katherine Clarkson 'SVO' HCC/AOS x Pot. Leopard Gem 'Spotted Leopard')

SVO is renowned for novelty breeding of yellow flowers with red spots.  This new cross combines several important qualities of both parents: color, shape, flower count, and modest plant height of not more than 10”.  The Katherine Clarkson (C. Mark Jones x Jungle Gem) is a significant hybrid, with many superior qualities like good flower size, strong color, and compact plant stature.  Leopard Gem (Blc. Waianae Leopard x Slc. Jungle Gem) is similar in many regards; however, one of its parents, Waianae Leopard, can bloom with 8-12 flowers on a stem, making Leopard Gem floriferous.  Here we should reinforce the positive qualities in this breeding line.  Expect bright yellow colors, bold dark burgundy spots, flat fuchsia colored lips, and well-formed flowers, all on compact plants.

SVO 5806
Pot. Dendi's Gem (Blc. SunCoast Sunspots 'Super Select'x Slc. Jungle Gem 'Yellow Jacket')

These are compact growing plants that stay under 10” tall,  excellent for windowsill growing.  Jungle Gem is a great breeder for color and plant size, and SunCoast Sunspots is one of the best producers of yellow/red spotted flowers to date.  These have proven themselves easy to grow and flower.

SVO 5858
Slc. NEW HYBRID
(Slc. Jungle Jewel 'Mojave' AM/AOS x Slc. SunCoast Sunspots 'Super Select')

This is a variable hybrid designed to produce flowers with a range of colors.  We are hoping that a few will have red petals and sepals with white lips.  Yes, that’s correct, red flowers and white lips!  One already flowered Pic 1 2438with rusty red flowers and a mostly white lip.  This cross will be variable in terms of flower color, but I expect that most will be spotted with a yellow background.  But….what if some flowers look like this?  Pic 2

SVO 5949
Pot. NEW HYBRID
(Blc. Sun Spots 'SVO Best' x Slc. Katherine Clarkson 'SVO' HCC/AOS)

This cross will make for well-formed yellow flowers with red spots and flat crimson-red lips.  Sun Spots (C. Mark Jones x SunCoast Sunspots) is a very successful cross, with large flower size, good color and excellent spots.  Katherine Clarkson (C. Mark Jones x Jungle Gem) was the first grex with really nice, large yellow flowers with red spots on a compact plant. Mark Jones appears in the background of both parents and has some of the widest petals of any spotted hybrid.  I am counting on this influence widen the petals in this grex.  Great color is assured, as both SunCoast Sunspots and Jungle Gem have plenty of vibrant yellow.  Plants will mature at 10” tall and flower in 4” pots.

SVO 6004
L. Summit ('Tomiko' HCC/AOS x self)

This is a very interesting hybrid.  The parents of Summit are anceps x lyonsii.  L. lyonsii was once considered a Schomburgkia and occurs in the Caribbean; L. anceps is native to Mexico and very tolerant of summer heat and winter cold.  The cultivar ‘Tomiko’ is a great grower.  It tolerates both cold and heat, and the plant is compact, developing new leads and forming specimens quickly.  The plants from this selfing will produce inflorescences about 3’ long with 5-7 flowers that are light lavender, spotted and veined darker lavender, and a lip that is veined dark purple.

Mini Catts

The mini-cats are plants that will stay under 6” tall and bloom in a 3”-4” pot. It is not uncommon for mini-cats to bloom twice a year. The modern breeding has developed surprisingly nice improvements where the plants are heat tolerant, produce large flowers, have brilliant colors and superb flower shape.  There is always space for one more of these in every collection.

Want something different?  Menehune Princess (Slc. Fire Fantasy x C. Little Dipper) is a nicely flared flower that blooms twice a year.  The Peggy San (Lc. Peggy Huffman x Bro. sanguinea) has the flower shape of the Broughtonia with lavender flares.  ‘Gold Country’ is a mutation out of the cloning of the Stewart Orchids plant ‘Cynosure’ AM/AOS.  This grex will have full shaped Broughtonia-type blooms with flared flowers in reds and red-lavenders.  These are true mini plants that will flower in a 3” pot and never get more than 6” tall.  Limited Supply

Slc. NEW HYBRID (Slc. California Apricot 'Orange Circle' HCC/AOS x Slc. Jillian Lee 'SVO')

California Apricot has a proven track record in breeding high quality offspring.  It intensifies color and imparts wide petals as well as improved flower size.  Its use in breeding was popularized by the late Frank Fordyce in hybrids like Slc. Hazel Boyd, Slc. Final Touch, Slc. Seagulls Apricot, Slc. Mango Spice, Slc. Fordyce Prelude, etc.  The grex Jillian Lee (Sc. Beaufort x Sl. Orpetii) has excellent rounded shape, red-orange flowers and a lip that is red with a yellow throat.  Plants will mature at less than 6” tall, and flowers will be 2.5-3” across in bright orange-red colors with red lips.  I have high expectations for this cross.  Limited Supply.

As the name suggests, Red Blast has a really great, solid red flower!  The parents of this wonderful mini-catt are proven breeders (Pot. Rubescence x Sl. Minipet), and by pairing this cross with the valuable, proven breeding qualities of Beaufort, you just know that the offspring are going to be good!   These plants will stay under 6” tall, with flowers of excellent shape, and will bloom at least 2x a year.  Flower color will be in sunset shades of yellow to orange to red, and the lips will be red.

Sl. Minipet (Sl.Orpetii 'Kathleen' AM/AOS x S. coccinea 'Higher Ground' )

This is one of the best solid red mini-catts available and will easily bloom in 3” pots. Both of the parents are tetraploids.  Orpetii is a primary hybrid of (L. pumila x Soph. coccinea), and coccinea 'Higher Ground' originated in Japan and is one of the very best, with perfectly flat 3” flowers (pictured is similar).  The genetic makeup of this grex approximately 75% coccinea and 25% pumila.  These flowers look like super good Soph. coccineas, but are much easier to grow and bloom.

When was the last time you saw Sc. Beaufort (C. luteola x Soph. coccinea) for sale?  Both parents are considered tetraploids and occurred as mutations in the cloning process.  'Hartford's Elmwood 4N' received an 89 point AM/AOS - Wow!  By pairing these two, we hope to get progeny as good as or better than the parents.  Several have flowered and so far are proving that the offspring from this sib cross are as good as the parents.  Limited Supply.

Pot. NEW HYBRID
(Pot. Golden Circle 'OPRL' x Slc. Seagulls Apricot 'Majestic')

One of my favorite breeding plant is Golden Circle (Blc. Goldenzelle x Slc. Circle of Life) 'OPRL,' which gets its cultivar name from the Orange Petals and a Red Lip.  The flowers have amazing shape with beautiful color, and as a real plus it blooms three times a year.  Seagulls Apricot (California Apricot x Soph. coccinea) is known for its small plant stature, bright orange color and wide petals.  Bright orange flowers with red lips and excellent wide petals, all on a small plant that can bloom twice a year.  Wow!

SVO 5940
Slc. Seagulls Apricot (Slc. California Apricot 'Orange Circle' HCC/AOS x Soph. coccinea 'Higher Ground' )

I have made this cross several times, and the result is always consistently high quality blooms.  This time I have used a Soph. coccinea of superior size and shape, imported from Japan (pictured is similar).  These will flower in 3” pots with scarlet-red blooms - a super nice mini!

Coerulea

In Cattleyas the ‘coerulea’ color or ‘blue’ as it is referred to, is very intriguing and rare in nature. In the early years of blue breeding there were not many known species, so breeding was limited to a few possibilities. Today, we have many species and hybrids to breed with, and the quality of blue flowers has been improving rapidly. Don’t miss the spotted blue crosses…These are a great addition for the discriminating collector.

Lc. NEW HYBRID
(Lc. Indigo Love f. coerulea 'SVO' x C. Valentine f. coerulea 'Billy B' HCC/AOS)

One of the most interesting cattleya colors is coerulea, in which flowers that normally are lavender instead lack red pigment and appear bluish as a result.  At SVO, we have come a long way in developing coerulea cattleyas and selecting for compact plants that will bloom in 4” pots.  C. Indigo Love (Indigo Dawn x Love Knot) is a short, compact grower with 2-3 large flowers that are a nice coerulea color with a dark slate-blue lip.  The Valentine (C. loddigesii x C. warneri) is a larger plant that requires a 5-6” pot to flower at maximum potential.  It blooms with 7-9 well displayed coerulea flowers that have a yellow spot in the throat, adding a beautiful contrast to the coerulea color.  So what do we expect from this cross?  Improving flower count is the main objective, with the possibility for 4-5 blooms while keeping the plant size down, to bloom in 4” pots.  This has real potential!

SVO 5602
C. NEW HYBRID

Species

Collecting select and awarded Cattleya species has been a passion of mine for many years. The collection now contains over 700 selected plants!  Recently, I started breeding the “best of the best” in an effort to provide these superior and often hard to find Cattleya species available for the hobbyist.

SVO 5596
C. velutina ('SVO 18' x 'Double Spots 12')

Not often offered for sale, C. velutina is rarely seen in collections in the US.  In the wild, it is thought to be nearly extinct.  This highly desirable species is a bit more challenging to grow than most bifoliates, with extra attention needed at repotting.  It's important to only repot when new roots are starting to grow, usually in late summer after the pseudobulbs mature or bloom.  Keep these in the smallest pots possible.  The cultivar ‘SVO 18’ is named for its ability to flower with 18 blooms per stem.  Yes - 18 flowers!  For this species, 6-10 is the normal range, and this clone is truly exceptional.  Just look at the picture.  ‘Double Spots’ is also a reliable bloomer, producing 10-12 flowers that are extra spotty.  Here we have two exceptionally well flowered cultivars, and I expect the offspring will have the same qualities.  Believe me - you don't want to miss out on these!

SVO 5600
L. tenebrosa ('Stewart 68807' x 'Rainforest' FCC/AOS)

‘Stewart 68807’ was given to me by Rick Wells, a long time Cattleya collector in Southern California.  He tells the story of how this plant was selected out of many superb cultivars, with this having the largest flowers and the strongest stem, holding 6 flowers well above the foliage.  It does not have the dark color of some tenebrosa cultivars - the flower is more honey colored - but I agree with Rick that it's one of the best tenebrosa clones when it comes to flower size and carriage.  Still considered one of the best ever, ‘Rainforest’ blooms with 4 to 5 flowers that are almost 8.5” wide, and that is a BIG flower!  The genetics represented here may give us the best size, flower count and carriage seen.  These are growing nicely and showing good vigor.

SVO 5601
L. tenebrosa ('Rainforest' FCC/AOS x 'Paul' AM/AOS)

Still considered by many to be the best, ‘Rainforest’ blooms with 4 to 5 flowers that are almost 8.5” wide.  Amazing!  ‘Paul’ has deeply colored petals and sepals in the darkest red-bronze color, with a vibrant purple lip.  These will bloom with extra large dark bronze flowers with deep purple lips.  These seedlings are growing well, showing good vigor, too.

SVO 5603
L. tenebrosa ('Claire' HCC/AOS x 'Paul' AM/AOS)

Both ‘Claire’ and ‘Paul’ are siblings that came from a line of breeding with L. tenebrosa ‘Spectabilis’ AM/AOS, a cultivar with very dark colored flowers.  These both have deeply colored petals and sepals in the darkest red-bronze color, with a vibrant purple lip.  These will be consistently high quality, with blooms of extra large size, dark bronze color, and deep purple lips.  These are good, vigorous seedlings.

SVO 5909
C. intermedia f. orlata ('SVO' 1357x 'Ruby Lipstick')

I really like the orlata form of C. intermedia!  The red rim around the lip margin is spectacular against the light pink flower.  These are growing really well and showing good vigor, and they'll mature quickly.  A very good Spring bloomer and definitely worth having in any collection!

Standard

These standard size Cattleyas will mature at 12” to 24” tall. They possess the similar growth habit of “Compact Cattleyas”, just taller. These are bred to have strong stems caring 5 or more flowers and will be very impressive when blooming at mature size. These make excellent display plants for orchid shows and most will bloom during the spring show season.

(C. Milton Warne 'Premier' AM/AOS x Pot. Love Passion 'Island Romance')

After thinking about the breeding of Lc. Straight Answer, I realized that there may be other opportunities to use Milton Warne and possibly make an even better hybrid similar to Straight Answer.  Incorporating Love Passion (William Farrell x Lc. Love Sound) is a beautiful plant with lovely flowers - the 12-14 blooms are bright yellow with red flares on the petals and lateral sepals.  These will have big clusters of flowers on strong stems, in colors from orange to yellow, many having red flaring.  Limited Supply.

L. Pacavia (L. tenebrosa 'None Darker' x L. purpurata f. atro-purpurea 'SVO')

Pacavia is a robust growing plant that does well outside in frost-free climates, and also does well under hot conditions.  It blooms in June during that ‘slack’ period when not many other cattleyas are in flower.  ‘None Darker’ has deeply colored petals and sepals - some of the darkest red-bronze colors I have seen in a tenebrosa.  The f. atro-purpurea is a beautiful, very dark purple color form of purpurata.  These Pacavias are going to be extra nice, with dark purple-red flowers and darker purple lips.  This is a classic primary hybrid that everyone should have in their collections.

L. NEW HYBRID
(L. sanguiloba 'SVO' x L. tenebrosa 'None Darker')

Laelia sanguiloba is an orange flower with red side lobes on the lip.  ‘None Darker’ has deeply colored petals and sepals - some of the darkest red-bronze colors I have seen in this species.  This cross is a lot like L. Zip (milleri x tenebrosa), but sanguiloba has more flowers per stem and a longer inflorescence than milleri.  Flowers will be an intense red-orange with dark purple-red lips, a very attractive color combination, and the stems will carry 7-9 starry flowers.

Lc. Tropical Trick
(Lc. Tropical Sunset 'Ocean's Heaven' x Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Magic' AM/AOS)

Every spring I enjoy seeing Lc. Trick or Treat and its hybrids bloom, with their large heads of starry, brightly-colored flowers.  Suwada Orchid Nursery in Japan made Lc. Tropical Sunset (C. Horace x Tropic Glow).  This grex has large orange flowers with full, dark red lips, well presented on a strong inflorescence.  Simply put, this is an excellent hybrid!  Trick or Treat will assure high flower count and orange tepal color, and the lips will be red.  These will be super hybrids, with lots of brightly colored flowers for February and March.

Slc. NEW HYBRID
(Lc. Koolau Seagulls 'Volcano Queen' AM/AOS x Slc. Kagaribi Dawn 'Red Star')

Koolau Seagulls produces long inflorescence with 13-15 starry red flowers, held well above the foliage… quite an impressive sight!  Kagaribi Dawn also flowers with starry blooms, however they have an intense red color.  The expectation here is for deep red flowers of starry shape, held high on long inflorescences.  It will almost look like red fireworks exploding above the plants!  Limited Supply.

Slc. NEW HYBRID
(Slc. Kagaribi Dawn 'Red Star' x Lc. Spring Fires 'Lenette #2')

Kagaribi Dawn flowers with starry blooms in an intense red color - quite an attention getter!   I like the breeding qualities of Spring Fires (Fires of Spring x Fire Island), with its 5-9 deep red flowers held on strong stems.  The expectation is for dark red flowers produced on sturdy stems, all on a compact plant.

Pot. NEW HYBRID
(Blc. Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' HCC/AOS x Pot. Love Passion 'Dogashima')

Bright orange flowers are hard to come by - I just love them!  So I had to make this cross.  Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' (Orange Nuggett x Bouton D'Or) has amazing orange color - a real shocker!  Love Passion 'Dogashima' (Lc. Trick or Treat x William Farrell) produces 7-9 true orange flowers on a long stem.  These will have good stems with big, well-supported heads of bright orange flowers.  Should be good March bloomers and real show stoppers!

Blc. NEW HYBRID
(Blc. Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' HCC/AOS x C. Orchidglade 'SVO' HCC/AOS)

Blc. Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' (Orange Nuggett x Bouton D'Or) has amazing orange flowers with great form and good heads of blooms.  Orchidglade (walkeriana x aurantiaca) is an interesting parent, as it flowers 2 x a year with flat orange flowers, a yellow lip with a touch of red centrally, and 5-7 well supported blooms.  I am expecting full shaped orange flowers, and I’m hoping for some to have yellow lips.  I don’t recall ever seeing that color combination before, and this could be a real first!

Pot. NEW HYBRID
(Pot. Love Passion 'Island Romance' x Lc. Aussie Sunset 'Cosmic Fire')

The plant and flowers of Love Passion (William Farrell x Lc. Trick or Treat) are a lot  like a ‘Super’ Lc. Trick or Treat but with larger and fuller orange flowers, carried 15 or more on a stem that extends above the foliage.  Aussie Sunset (Fires of Spring x C. Gene May) has 5 to 9 orange flowers with flared petals and a yellow central spot, red tips and a full shaped red lip - very colorful!  Both parents have strong inflorescences.  I am expecting great presentation of many well-sized orange flowers, flared in a variety of colors, including yellow, orange and red.

Blc. NEW HYBRID
(Blc. Izumi Charm 'SVO' AM/AOS x Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS)

The grex Izumi Charm (Love Sound x Lc. Melody Fair) produces robust plants with strong inflorescences carrying 4-5 light yellow 4.75” flowers with dark crimson red lips. Guess What (Blc. Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) flowers with 9-1l bright orange blooms on a strong stem.  I think that the outcome of this pairing will be sturdy plants bearing 7-9 large, bright golden-yellow flowers with dark red lips presented above the foliage on 14-16” tall plants.

Blc. NEW HYBRID
(Blc. Izumi Charm 'SVO' AM/AOS x Blc. Goldenzelle 'Lemon Chiffon' AM/AOS)

The first time I saw Izumi Charm (Love Sound x Lc. Melody Fair) flower I was impressed by the robust plants and strong inflorescences, carrying 4-5 light yellow 4.75” flowers with dark crimson red lips.  Goldenzelle (Fortune x C. Horace) has an impressive heritage and set the standard for high quality yellow flowers with over 25 AOS awards.  This grex will result in large-growing plants with big 6” yellow flowers and dark red lips.  They will also have sturdy stems, giving a great display of 4-5 blooms held well above the foliage.

Pot. NEW HYBRID
(Pot. Love Passion 'Dogashima' x Blc. Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' HCC/AOS)

I have been using Love Passion (William Farrell x Lc. Trick or Treat) as a parent in place of Trick or Treat, since Love Passion carries 15+ larger and fuller orange flowers, held well above the foliage.  Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' (Orange Nuggett x Bouton D'Or) has nice-sized heads of amazing orange-colored blooms with great form.  If you like big clusters of bright orange flowers as much as I do, this cross is a must-have.

Blc. NEW HYBRID
(Blc. Guess What 'SVO' AM/AOS x Blc. Hawaiian Discovery 'Fluorescent Orange' HCC/AOS)

Guess What (Waikiki Gold x Lc. Trick or Treat) will add its high flower count of  9-11 bright orange blooms on a strong stem to the amazing, shapely orange flowers of  Hawaiian Discovery (Orange Nuggett x Bouton D'Or).  As I've said before, I like big heads of bright orange flowers!  These will be particularly bright colors.

Pot. Linda Vee (Pot. Love Passion 'Dogashima'x Lc. Trick or Treat 'SVO')

I have been breeding with Love Passion (William Farrell x Lc. Trick or Treat), which resembles a ‘super’ Trick or Treat.  So why breed it back to Trick or Treat?  I expect this cross to result in very high flower counts, with each inflorescence holding 15-19 bright orange blooms high above the foliage.  The reciprocal is also available.  SVO 5850

Blc. NEW HYBRID
(Lc. Trick or Treat 'Orange Beauty' HCC/AOS x Blc. Laughing Boy 'SVO Flame' AM/AOS)

Trick or Treat is a great breeding plant that imparts important qualities like bright orange flowers and strong stems carrying 15-19 blooms high above the foliage.  Laughing Boy (Lc. Dennis Olivas x Blc. Love Sound) has clusters of 12-14 eye-catching yellow-orange flowers with red flares on the petals and sepals.  Interestingly, the presence of Dennis Olivas (Trick or Treat x Penny Kuroda) means that this cross will have plenty of influence from Trick or Treat.  We expect a high flower count of star-shaped blooms in orange, with many having red flares.  Plants will be tall, maturing at 16”, with flowers held above the foliage.

Lc. NEW HYBRID
(Lc. Aussie Sunset 'Cosmic Fire' x Lc. Straight Answer 'No Question' AM/AOS)

Aussie Sunset (Fires of Spring x C. Gene May) has 5-9 orange flowers with flared petals having a yellow spot centrally, red tips and a full shaped red lip.  Very colorful!  Straight Answer (Milton Warne x Trick or Treat) was popularized by the clone ‘No Question’ and has received high accolades for its big heads of yellow flowers and red flares.  Great potential here, where we are targeting orange flowers with red flares, held well in groups of 7-9 blooms.
